C.P. English I Teacher: Mr. Schott
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grades 9+

This class is designed to help students with Basic English content including grammar, writing, and vocabulary.  The course also focuses on the following literary genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and mythology.  Students will be involved in several cooperative projects and will be engaged in various writing activities based on class readings throughout the school year. The foundation work for the career portfolio project will begin in this course.


C.P. English II Teacher: Mrs. Bagley
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grades 10+

This class uses the same textbook as English II and studies the same units
but with more in-depth study and more vocabulary words.  The books chosen for
book reports must be taken from the list of recommended books for college –
bound students.           


C.P. English III Teacher: Mr. Schott
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grades 11+ (English I and English II) (For college bound students)

The textbook offers a chronological approach to American literature, beginning
with the Colonial Period and ending with the 20th century.  Although the
emphasis is on literature rather than grammar, there will be reinforcement of basic
grammar rules.  Students will also be involved in several cooperative projects and
will be engaged in various writing activities based onclass readings throughout the
school year.  The novel, a book report, and various vocabulary exercises will be
incorporated as well.  The career portfolio project will also be a focus on showing
students how to identify and organize information about themselves.  Other
activities may include a research project the fourth quarter.


C.P. English IV Teacher: Mrs. Bagley
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grade 12 (English I , II, and III)

This course is designed to prepare students for college English classes.   The main focus of the class is on writing that will prepare students for college course work.  In addition, major pieces of literature from each time period in British history are studied and vocabulary is expanded.  The career portfolio is revised and updated for the final draft.



English Electives

Creative Writing Teacher: Mr. Schott
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 11+ (Alternate years, at least a C average in college prep English or teacher approval prior to scheduling)
Creative writing is a junior/senior semester elective course. The course is designed to help students' self expression, nurture creativity, and tap into the imagination. Students will be involved in writing sessions where final work is shared and constructively critiqued in an open forum attempting to foster creativity and develop fluency. Prerequisite includes at least a C average in college prep English or teacher approval prior to scheduling
Comprehensive Communications Teacher: Mr. Schott
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 11+

In this class, students will study the verbal and nonverbal areas of communications. The study will focus on developing intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, and public speaking skills, including terminology, organizing speech information, and how to overcome inhibitions. Activities will include the following speeches: informative; persuasive; impromptu; debating; and entertaining


Science Fiction Teacher: Mrs. Detmon
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 11+

This is a one-semester elective open to juniors and seniors.  Novels read Include The Time Machine, The Martian Chronicles, and Brave New World.  Short stories are taken from The Science Fiction Hall of Fame.  The class is mostly reading and discussing.


Mythology Teacher: Mrs. Detmon
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 11+

A study of the myths and legends of Greece and Rome with a brief look at Norse myths at the end of the semester.  Students keep a notebook of the various gods and goddesses with examples of modern - day applications.


Yearbook Teacher: Mrs. Bagley
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grade 10+

Students learn skills of book production, including writing, layout design,proofing, advertising sales, and yearbook financial management.


ACT Prep Teacher: Tomlinson
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grades 11+

Students will prepare for the American College Testing (ACT) with this course.  Advanced testing-taking strategies, concepts and patterns, as well as time management will be presented.  Students will reinforce strategies through practice tests that will review prior core/college prep curriculum.  Areas covered will include English, Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, and Science reasoning.
