Middle/High School Principal’s Newsletter

As the summer winds down, I will begin by welcoming you to the 2015-2016 school year.  Antwerp’s goal each school year is to provide a quality education based around developing our students’ critical thinking, collaborative and communication skills. With a focused effort to develop these particular skills, our students will be college and career ready.  To accomplish this, we must maintain a positive learning environment where students take “ACCOUNTABILITY” for their actions.

Antwerp Middle/High School, as an educational institution, has an obligation to provide a safe learning environment where all students will receive a quality education.  To accomplish this, students will understand and exhibit ACCOUNTABILITY. This involves students taking responsibility for their actions whether positive or negative. Our students must be aware of the rules, policies, procedures, and regulations for which they will be held ACCOUNTABLE.  There are a few policies that will be emphasized to the students and I ask for your help and support in these areas as well: dress code, electronic equipment, attendance, bullying, inappropriate language, and public display of affection.  These are only a few of the policies, so I emphasize that you intently read through the student handbook after the student receives it.  You will also be able to access the student handbook on the school website.

For example:

  • Under the dress code policy, a student’s hair color must be a natural color.  It is the parents’/student responsibility to make sure when hair that is dyed is a natural color.

  • The second topic is the length of the shorts/dresses, wearing of spaghetti strap tops, and jeans. In addition, shorts or jeans must be worn at waist level. The length of shorts/dresses must reach their fingertips when arms are placed to the side.

  • The third is our electronic equipment policy, which indicates students shall not use or possess personal devices during the school day. Unauthorized electronic equipment will be confiscated from the student and disciplinary action will be taken.

  • A fourth involves our attendance policy, which emphasizes the importance on daily attendance. Attendance is important in developing a quality work ethic.  A student must have a doctor’s note for every absence beyond five days.

  • Lastly, a discussion should happen with the student regarding our bullying policy.  Bullying will not be tolerated and will be addressed appropriately. I strongly encourage you to read our policy on bullying, which can be found on our school website and in the student handbook.

One major change from prior school years, is the implementation of “Friday School” to replace “Saturday School.” Friday school will be held from 3:00 – 5:30p.m. Those students will be called to the office at the end of the school day and will walk to the assigned classroom once the hallways have been cleared after dismissal of school. It is the parent/student responsibility to arrange transportation home at the conclusion of the Friday School session.

I am excited to inform you that Antwerp Middle School (grades 6-8) will be in its third year of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). This is a prestigious organization that will help establish and expand our focus on academic and social performance.  Student members of the NJHS will strengthen their abilities to use skills to improve the society around them. This prestigious membership is not a right, but a privilege. Students must meet certain criteria to be eligible for this organization. The students will receive an informational brochure on the first day of school.

SCHEDULE PICKUP

High School students may pick up their schedules beginning Monday, August 6th - 11h, from 8:00-3:00. Beginning on Wednesday, August 12, Middle School students may begin picking up their schedules during regular office hours 8:00-3:00. There will be an Open House on Monday, August 17th, from 5:00 – 6:30p.m. and I encourage all students to attend.  It is important that you pick up your schedule prior to the first day of school.  As a reminder, the 2015-2016 school year officially begins at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2015.

SIXTH GRADERS

Incoming sixth graders are strongly encouraged to attend the Open House on Monday, August 18 from 5:00 – 6:30p.m. Again, There will be no separate sixth grade orientation. This will give the sixth grade students an opportunity to find their lockers, practice unlocking their lockers, place supplies needed in their lockers, and determine where classrooms are located. Basic supplies for sixth graders include a separate folder and spiral notebook for each class (6-8) as well as pencils. Students may use a 3-ring binder organizing system if desired. If there are additional items needed for class, teachers will let you know on the first day.
