Antwerp students in K-8 celebrated the Hour of Code through various coding activities from hands-on “unplugged” lessons that teach computer science fundamentals to computer block and text-based coding challenges from the Hour of Code website. Kindergarten students used toothpicks and gumdrops for Building a Foundation, a lesson focused on persistence and learning that failure is not the end of a journey, but a hint for how to succeed. KG students followed steps to complete a structural engineering challenge, predict and discuss potential issues in structure creation, build a structure based on team plan, and revise both plan and structure until they satisfy the challenge. First grade students completed project Move It, Move It, in which they learned the importance of using a common language to give clear instructions. Students practiced controlling one another using simple combinations of hand gestures. Students in grades 2-8, with more experience in coding, completed coding projects from the Hour ofCode.org website using block and text-based coding principles.
